Cholesterol Medicine List

Statin is a category of drugs that reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by reducing the production of cholesterol from the liver. (The other source of cholesterol in the bloodstream is dietary cholesterol.) Statins block the enzyme in the liver that is responsible for making cholesterol. This enzyme is called hydroxymethyl glutaryl-coenzyme A reductase (HMG-CoA reductase). Scientifically, statins are also referred to as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. Statins that are approved for use in the U.S. include rosuvastatin (Crestor) atorvastatin (Lipitor), lovastatin (Mevacor, Altoprev), pravastatin (Pravachol), simvastatin (Zocor),  pitavastatin (Livalo). and fluvastatin (Lescol, Lescol XL)

The most common side effects of statins are:

  • Headache,
  • Nausea,
  • Vomiting,
  • Constipation,
  • Diarrhea,
  • Rash,
  • Weakness, and
  • Muscle pain.

The most serious side effects are liver failure and rhabdomyolysis (injury or death of muscle tissue). Serious liver damage caused by statins is rare. More frequently, statins cause abnormalities of liver tests. Abnormal tests usually return to normal even when a statin has been continued, but if the unnatural evaluation value is over three time

The liver makes cholesterol to use in production of bile. Bile-acid-binding resins attach to the bile acids, causing the liver to use more cholesterol than it normally does. When effective, this kind of medication lowers the total cholesterol levels within the body. Resins available for prescription are L-Cholest, Prevalite and Questran (cholestyramine), Welchol (colesevelam) and Colestid (colestipol).

Cholesterol Absorption Inhibitors

Absorption inhibitors block the amount of cholesterol that is absorbed by the small intestine. The medication Zetia (ezetimibe) is a cholesterol absorption inhibitor that may be prescribed with a statin drug; Vytorin (simvastatin and ezetimibe combined) is a statin along with a cholesterol absorption inhibitor.
